Young talent dominates Vernon’s 200th birthday party

 pictures from performance!

When the town of Vernon celebrates its 200th birthday  Monday,  October 13, most of participating talent will be less than twenty years old. Rockville high school students wrote the re-enactment . The major actors are Rockville high school students. Additionally, another RHS student will present the major exhibit of the evening.

“Vernon’s First Town Meeting,” a one-act play written by Melanie Lieberman and Dawn Rzeznikiewicz, is the highlight of the program presented at the First Congregational Church, 695 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon at 7:00pm. They are creative writing students of Victoria Nordlund. Student actors include Annie Buller, Renee Collins, Tyler McCombe, Yvette Olbrect, Katie Scibelli, Jocelyn weaver working under the direction of Amy Matyseck, drama instructor.

Sheila English will exhibit selections from her collection of vintage women’s attire. She has acquired items dating from the Victorian era through the mid-twentieth century, which she occasionally wears rather than customary 21st century fashion. For the birthday party, Ms. English will concentrate upon earlier periods and will wear one of her selections.

The play draws upon the historical record of Vernon’s very first town meeting, supplemented by other meetings to give the audience a sampling of issues confronting the townspeople during that period. Beyond such embellishments and a liberal dose of humor, the election of officials and enacted laws are faithful to the minutes of the November 21, 1808 town meeting. The characters are based upon the speakers and townspeople identified in the minutes plus other freeman, or voters, listed in other official town records.

Also performing will be honorable Bruno Simonetti, Bolton’s First Selectman, acting as Saul Alvord who was the Bolton selectman and legislator when Vernon in 1808. Various local Vernon officials and other residents will have roles in the drama.

Descendants of the early Vernon residents who attend this performance are invited to identify themselves to the re-enactment committee so that they may be recognized.

Admission is free.

Come celebrate our town’s actual 200th birthday with us!

Vernon's 200th Birthday celebrated with a re-enactment October, 13 2008

Join us as we go back in time, and re-live history with  local elections and the passing of various laws, take place before your eyes at the very first town meeting in Vernon

Rockville High School Creative Writing students, Melanie Lieberman & Dawn Rzeznikiewicz have created a humorous drama, bringing us back to the start of the Town of Vernon . Most of the actors are students, also, working under the direction of Amy Matyseck, drama instructor at Rockville High. Local residents will be recruited to “fill in the gaps” to complete the troupe of actors.

Among the props for the drama is a copy of original General Assembly resolution on file in the State archives. State Representative Claire Janowski, 56th District, retrieved the original and had it photocopied for the occasion. Other items owned by the Vernon Historical Society will be integrated into the production—a table and four chairs probably used in a public room.

First Congregational Church is located at 695 Hartford Turnpike (corner of Rte.30 and Center Road ) in Vernon . This one-act play will be followed by a social hour, complete with a birthday cake, provided by the First Congregational Church. Admission is free. Feel free to dress in either period or contemporary attire.
